Carboxytherapy

Oxygenate, firm, smooth: a natural way to revitalise the skin and tissues

Dr Franck Pourrez, aesthetic doctor in Nice, giving an injection with a syringe near the eye/eyebrow of a reclining patient wearing a headband.

What is carboxytherapy?

Carboxytherapy is a medical treatment that involves injecting sterile medical CO₂ under the skin with a fine needle.
This gas, naturally present in the body, stimulates microcirculation, cell oxygenation and collagen production, without adding volume.

It is a versatile technique used in aesthetic medicine for more than 30 years to tone, smooth and regenerate tissues, with no downtime.

What can it treat?

Carboxytherapy is used for:

  • Bluish or hollow dark circles
  • Mild to moderate skin laxity (face, neck, arms, stomach…)
  • Crepey skin (neck, décolleté, arms)
  • Recent scars or stretch marks
  • Fibrous cellulite and poor circulation
  • Post-pregnancy, post-liposuction, heavy legs

The treatment is also used alongside other treatments such as peels, mesotherapy or LED.

How does carboxytherapy work?

The controlled injection of CO₂ causes local vasodilation and an immediate increase in oxygen in the tissues.
This boosts microcirculation, helps eliminate toxins, stimulates collagen production and improves skin tone.

The result: skin that is smoother, firmer and better oxygenated — without adding any volumising substance.

What happens during a carboxytherapy session?

1Initial consultation

The doctor identifies the areas to be treated and checks for any contraindications.

2CO₂ injection

The gas is injected into or under the skin through a very fine micro-needle connected to a controlled-delivery device.

The session lasts 15 to 30 minutes depending on the areas.
The treatment is only mildly uncomfortable : you feel slight pressure or a brief sensation of warmth.

3Back to normal activities

There is no downtime, and any redness disappears within a few minutes.

Results and protocol

The effects are gradual. After a few sessions:

  • The skin is firmer, denser and more toned
  • Dark circles lighten
  • Stretch marks fade
  • Circulation improves

A course of 6 to 8 sessions is recommended, at1 to 2 sessions per week, followed by maintenance depending on the areas.

Contraindications

  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding
  • Active skin infection in the area
  • History of phlebitis or recent embolism
  • Severe, unstable respiratory disease
  • Uncontrolled cardiovascular disorders
