What is hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis is excessive sweating beyond the body’s normal physiological needs.
It can affect different areas of the body: underarms, palms, soles of the feet, scalp or forehead.
Often misunderstood, this condition can have a major impact on quality of life, both personally and professionally.

How does the treatment work?

The treatment involves injecting botulinum toxin into the affected areas.
This product acts locally by temporarily blocking the nerves that stimulate the sweat glands, thereby reducing sweat production.

It is a safe, non-invasive medical procedure performed in the practice, with proven effectiveness for many years.

Commonly treated areas

  • Underarms (axillary hyperhidrosis)
  • Hands (palmar hyperhidrosis)
  • Feet (plantar hyperhidrosis)
  • Forehead and scalp

The protocol is adapted to the area, the degree of sweating and the patient’s tolerance.

What happens during a session?

1Initial consultation

An assessment is carried out to evaluate the severity of the hyperhidrosis, check for contraindications and draw up a personalised plan.

2The injection

The area is disinfected, then very superficial micro-injections are made with a fine needle.
The session lasts 20 to 30 minutes. Local anaesthesia can be offered for sensitive areas (hands, feet).

3Back to normal activities

You can return to normal life immediately. The effects appear gradually from the 4th day, with an optimal result around 10 to 15 days.

Expected results

Patients notice a clear reduction, or even almost complete disappearance, of sweating in the treated area.
This brings lasting everyday comfort, without surgery.

Average duration of effect: 4 to 8 months, depending on the area and the patient’s metabolism.
One or two sessions a year are generally enough to maintain the effects.

Hyperhidrosis: understanding it to treat it better

Sweating is the body’s natural temperature-regulation mechanism. In people with hyperhidrosis, this mechanism is overactive: the sweat glands produce far more sweat than actually needed, regardless of heat or physical effort.

There are two main forms:

  • Primary hyperhidrosis (or idiopathic): neurological in origin, with no identified medical cause. It often begins in adolescence and mainly affects the underarms, hands and feet.
  • Secondary hyperhidrosis : linked to an underlying condition (thyroid disorder, diabetes, menopause, infection…) or to certain medications.

In all cases, a medical assessment is essential before any treatment.

Why is botulinum toxin effective against sweating?

Botulinum toxin (or Botox®) has been used for more than 20 years to treat hyperhidrosis. Its mechanism of action is simple and targeted: injected into the skin, it blocks the nerve signals that control the sweat glands. Without stimulation, these glands stop producing sweat in the treated area.

The effect is not systemic: sweating is not redistributed to other areas of the body. The treatment is localised, precise and has no impact on vital functions

Axillary hyperhidrosis: the most common treatment

Treating underarm hyperhidrosis is the most common indication. The area is easy to access, the injections are only mildly uncomfortable, and the results are particularly impressive. Many patients report an almost complete disappearance of sweating within the first few days after the session.

This treatment makes a real difference to daily life: no more marks on clothes, no more discomfort in business meetings or social situations, and renewed self-confidence.

Palmar and plantar hyperhidrosis: an adapted approach

The hands and feet are more sensitive areas. An anaesthetic cream or a local nerve-block anaesthetic can be offered to ensure patient comfort during the injections. Results are nevertheless very satisfying, with a significant reduction in sweating for several months.

Contraindications

  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Local infection or active cold sores
  • Allergy to botulinum toxin or albumin
  • Neuromuscular diseases (myasthenia gravis…)
